Sweet Chili Salmon Onigiri

Inspired by the classic Japanese rice snack, these Sweet Chili Salmon Onigiri are a deliciously convenient way to enjoy bold flavour on the go. Filled with our Wild Flaked Salmon – Sweet Chili, each bite delivers savoury heat balanced with tender rice. Perfect for lunchboxes, quick snacks, or meal prep, they’re simple to make and are kid-friendly.

Ingredients

2 cups (414 g) Short-grain white rice / sushi rice
2 1/3 cups Water
1/2 tsp (2 g) Salt
2 cans (80 g) Clover Leaf Wild Flaked Salmon - Sweet Chili
2 tbsp (27 g) Kewpie mayo or regular mayonnaise
1 tbsp Rice wine vinegar
3 (2 g each) Nori sheets, 8” x 8” (cut one or two sheets into 4 quarters)
1 tbsp (10 g) Black sesame seeds, for sprinkling
1 tbsp (10 g) Toasted sesame seeds, for sprinkling

PREP INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Rinse the rice until the water runs clear. Transfer the washed rice into a saucepan or a rice cooker. Add water and stir in the salt. Cover and bring the rice to a boil.
  2. Reduce to a simmer and cook until the rice is tender for about 15-18 minutes. Fluff the rice and take it off the heat. Let it cool slightly.
  3. While the rice is cooling, place the salmon in a bowl. Add mayonnaise and vinegar. Stir to combine.
  4. When the rice is cool enough, it’s time to prepare the onigiris. First, make sure your hands are damp to prevent sticking. Then place 1/3 cup of the rice in the palm of your hand. Create a dent and add a tablespoon of the salmon mixture in the center. Cover the top of the mixture with roughly 2 tablespoons of rice. Work the rice around the filling, forming it into a triangle (see our recipe photo below).
  5. Sprinkle the finished onigiri with a mixture of sesame seeds and/or wrap a whole or a quarter of nori sheet around the onigiri. Serve immediately or refrigerate covered for your next meal.

Tip:

  • Other options for rice wine vinegar are apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar.
