Re-inventing Fast Foods for Healthy Living

It’s that time of year again, after all the holiday celebrations have wound down, when many of us make resolutions to eat healthier.  Opt for the salad instead of the fries, choose 100% whole wheat over white, select lighter dressings over creamier ones.  These are all good choices.  But what if you could have your cake and eat it too?

Take a moment to check out how we have Re-Invented Fast Food.  With these delicious recipes, we can still have Burgers, Tacos & Pizza to name a few, but in a healthier way.  They have less fat, sodium, and calories without compromising on taste!

Consider incorporating one recipe into your menu at least once a week and you'll be a step closer to achieving your healthier-living goals.

Nutrition to Lower your Blood Cholesterol!

A blood test will determine your ‘bad’ cholesterol and triglycerides levels, both of which causes buildup of plaque in the arteries, leading to heart disease and stroke.

So seek out more of the following nutrients to help lower those levels –

  • Omega-3 fats found in fatty fish (salmon, sardines), ground flax seeds, walnuts and canola oil,
  • Unsaturated fats found in olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocados and fish, and
  • Fibre rich foods like whole grain breads, bran cereals, beans/legumes and fruits & veggies.

At the same time, ease up on –

  • Trans fat found in some margarines, and in packaged foods in large amounts,
  • Saturated fats from marbled meats, skin on poultry, high-fat dairy foods, butter and margarine,
  • Simple Sugars & Refined Grains available in sweets, pop, desserts and white bread,
  • Alcohol in excessive amounts, and
  • Calories by reducing caloric intake.
