Delicious & Good for Dad ( al)

While Dad’s out with his buddies or running errands or even pacing around the house contemplating his next DIY, why not gather some helping hands and whip up these easy and delicious snacks for him … and you?

Some of them are from our ‘Take 5’ recipe collection – 5 ingredients in 5 minutes – and they all use products rich in omega-3’s, a heart healthy nutrient – something Dad would truly appreciate.

  1. Salsa Tuna Roll-Ups is our most popular recipe, made with our Solid White Tuna (regular or low sodium variety), your preferred salsa and cream cheese, and rolled into scrumptious bite-sized pinwheels for the young and young-at-heart alike.
  2. Salmon Pâté and Creamy Salmon Dip both use Skinless Boneless Salmon to create lip-smacking tangy dips with a kick.
  3. Apple-Curry Tuna Buns contains our Solid White Tuna (regular or low sodium variety) and has the unlikely but surprisingly delicious fusion of flavours of dijonnaise plus curry powder, savoury onion and the sweet crunch of diced apples.
  4. Mediterranean Salmon ‘n’ Tomato Cups are can’t-stop-at-just-one petite hors d'oeuvres using Clover Leaf’s tender Skinless Boneless Atlantic Salmon, light sour cream, olives and oregano.

Mega Omega’s!

Our May 2011 newsletter featured the nutrient Protein and its importance in our daily diet. This month, we’d like to shine the spot light on another equally vital nutrient – omega-3’s.

Omega-3 polyunsaturates are good fats, and can be found most abundantly and naturally in foods such as fatty fish (e.g. salmon, sardines, mackerel). They carry with them a heap of benefits relating to heart health, cancer prevention, eye health, as well as infant brain and nervous system development.

There has also been study on the role of omega-3 fats in aging, more specifically in people’s overall alertness, memory and level of brain functioning as they get older.

Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating recommends eating at least 2 fish/seafood meals per week. To help you get there, why not try some of these quick recipes using Clover Leaf’s Salmon and Tuna products?

Clover Leaf’s Family of Salmon products

Clover Leaf offers three different types of salmon: Sockeye, Pink and Atlantic, each with their own unique & delicious flavour. They come in a variety of can sizes to suit every need - 106g, 150g, 170g, 213g & 418g.

Most cans are packed with some skin and bones. The skin and bones are loaded with extra nutrients and so we recommend leaving them in your recipe. Simply mash it all together (the bones are very soft from the cooking process and mash easily) and you’d never know they were there!

However, for those that don’t want the skin and bones, or the hassle of removing them we also offer salmon products that are packed Skinless and Boneless. And if reducing salt intake is on your agenda, we also offer Low Sodium Salmon products.

The health benefits of Clover Leaf Salmon are many. They are a source of omega-3 and iron, an excellent source of protein and vitamin D, and a good source of calcium. Many varieties are also rich in selenium and potassium.

In addition to the salmon appetizer recipes for Dad, mentioned earlier, we have a lot more delicious salmon recipes for you to try. So pick up one of Clover Leaf’s salmon products, available in the canned seafood section of your grocery store and enjoy preparing a delicious meal for your family today.

Until our next issue.....Happy Father’s Day!
