Weight

Albacore range in size from 10 - 80 lbs (4.5 - 36 kg) and are a highly migratory species. They are always on the move, and can be found in the temperate waters of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans.

Skipjack

Skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) is our light meat tuna product.

Weight

Skipjack tuna are the smallest of the tunas, ranging in size from 6 to 12 pounds (2.7 to 5.4 kg), and can be found swimming in large schools near the equator in all the world's oceans. Over half of all tuna caught are skipjack. Skipjack have relatively dark meat and a delicious, fish flavour.

Yellowfin

The fish in your product is Yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), which can grow to be up to five feet (1.5 m) long, and can weigh over 350 lbs (158 kg). They are found in the tropical waters of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans.

Weight

Yellowfin travel in large schools of individuals of similar size, and these schools tend to be mono-specific, meaning that they contain only yellowfin tuna and do not include other species.

South Pacific Ocean Albacore Stock

The albacore in your product is from the South Pacific Ocean.

The last assessment of the Southern Pacific stock determined the stock is not in an overfished condition relative to Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) and that fishing levels are below the MSY level. MSY is the upper limit on fishing that allows the population to replenish an equal or greater amount than what is being removed from our oceans.

One third of the world's albacore catch comes from the South Pacific, and 96% of these fish are caught by longline fishing vessels. The majority are caught near the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji. Another portion is caught near the Cook Islands and Tahiti.

Fisheries Management

The stock of South Pacific Albacore ranges from the sub-tropical waters of Southeast Asia all the way to Latin America. As most of the stock is west of 150 degrees west, the stock is managed primarily by the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC), an international Regional Fisheries Management Organization (RFMO).

Stock Status

The ISSF reports that the Southern Pacific stock was not in an overfished condition and that fishing levels are being maintained below the Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY). In 2013, 85,000 tons of albacore were caught in the South Pacific, which is well under the MSY limit of 99,000 tons.

Indian Ocean Albacore

The albacore in your product is from the Indian Ocean.

The 2014 stock assessment from the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) indicates that this stock is not overfished and not subject to overfishing relative to Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY). MSY is the upper limit on fishing that allows the population to replenish an equal or greater amount than what is being removed from our oceans.

Nearly 15% of the world's albacore catch comes from the Indian Ocean Albacore Fishery, and most of these fish are caught by longline fishing vessels. The portion of fish caught for the Clover Leaf® White Meat products come from the western half of the Indian Ocean.

Fisheries Management

This stock is managed by an international Regional Fisheries Management Organization (RFMO) called the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC). The IOTC, has chosen to manage the Indian Ocean albacore fishery by limiting the number of vessels targeting albacore at the 2007 level per IOTC Resolution 15/11.

Stock Status

The ISSF reports that the Indian Ocean stock is not overfished and not subject to overfishing relative to Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) but that fishing levels should be reduced to 34,000 tons. In 2013, 38,000 tons of albacore were caught in the Indian Ocean, which is just over the lower MSY limit of 34,700 tons.

North Pacific Ocean

The albacore in your product is from the North Pacific Ocean.

Current fishing levels of the North Pacific albacore stock are sustainable and the stock is healthy.

Longline fishing is used to catch 41% of North Pacific albacore.

Fisheries Management

This stock is managed by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) and the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC), international Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMO).

Stock Status

The ISSF reports that the North Pacific stock was not in an overfished condition and that fishing levels are being maintained below the reference points for Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY). In 2013, 93,000 tons of albacore were caught in the North Pacific.

Atlantic Ocean

The albacore in your product is from the Atlantic Ocean.

The albacore in the Atlantic are split into two populations—one in the North Atlantic, and one in the South Atlantic.

The 2016 assessments of the North Atlantic and South Atlantic Ocean albacore stocks indicated that overfishing relative to Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) target was not occurring and that neither fishery is in an overfished condition relative to MSY.

Strong fisheries management practices have returned these stocks to health over recent years!

About 20% of the albacore in the North Atlantic are caught by long line vessels.

About 2/3 of the albacore from the South Atlantic are caught by long line vessels.

For a number of years, catches of albacore have been well below both the MSY limit and the total allowable catch (TAC) limit.

These fishing levels and a solid management plan brought these stocks back to MSY levels.

Fisheries Management

The RFMO responsible for managing both Atlantic albacore stocks is the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna (ICCAT). The ICCAT manages the Atlantic Ocean albacore fishery by limiting the number of vessels targeting albacore and by establishing a total allowable catch limits by fishing nation.

Stock Status

The North Atlantic Ocean stock is not in an overfished condition and fishing levels are currently below the Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY). in 2015, 25,000 tons of albacore were caught in the North Atlantic Ocean, which is well below the msy limit of 37,000 tons, and catches have been below MSY since 2007. the TAC has been set at 28,000 tons.

The South Atlantic Ocean stock is not in an overfished condition and fishing levels are currently below the Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY). in 2015, 15,000 tons of albacore were caught in the South Atlantic Ocean, which is below the MSY limit of 25,900 tons and below the TAC of 24,000 tons.

Western and Central Pacific Ocean

The tuna in your product is from the Western and Central Pacific Ocean (WCPO).

The ISSF report on the status of the WCPO skipjack stock determined that the current fishing levels are sustainable, and that the stock is healthy.

Over one third of the world's skipjack catch comes from the WCPO, and 78% of skipjack in the WCPO are caught by purse seine fishing vessels.

Fisheries Management

The stock of western central Pacific skipjack is managed by the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC), an international Regional Fisheries Management Organization (RFMO). WPCFC has passed a number of conservation regulations to manage the fishing effort. The WPCFC's management objective is to maintain the stock at healthy levels by limiting the use of FADs, limiting the number of fishing days, and minimizing bycatch.

Independent human observers are required on all large-scale purse seine vessels fishing trips in the WCPFC area to monitor fishing operations and collect catch data.

Stock Status

The ISSF reports that the WCPO stock of skipjack was not in an overfished condition and that fishing levels are being maintained at the Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY). MSY is estimated to be 1.6 million tons. In 2013, 1.7 million tons of skipjack were caught in the Western and Central Pacific, slightly above the MSY limit.

The WPCFC's management objective is to maintain the stock at healthy levels by limiting the use of FADs, limiting the number of fishing days, and minimizing bycatch.

Eastern Pacific Ocean

The tuna in your product is from the Eastern Pacific Ocean (EPO).

The ISSF report on the status of the EPO skipjack stock determined that the current fishing levels are sustainable, and that the stock is healthy.

About 10% of the world's skipjack catch comes from the EPO, and 99% of these fish are caught by purse seine fishing vessels.

Fisheries Management

The stock of EPO skipjack is managed by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC), an international Regional Fisheries Management Organization (RFMO).

Human observers are required on all large scale purse seine vessels fishing in the IATTC area.

Stock Status

The ISSF reports that the EPO stock of skipjack was not in an overfished condition and fishing levels were near Maximum Sustainable Yield and that there was no credible risk of overfishing. In 2013, 279,000 tons of skipjack were caught in the Eastern Pacific.

The RFMO responsible for managing this stock, the IATTC, has passed conservation regulations to manage the fishing pressure. These regulations include seasonal closures of areas where large numbers of small bigeye are caught, closures for vessels with large capacity, and requirements for the retention of all tuna landed, regardless of size or type. The goal of the IATTC is to maintain the stock at healthy levels with conservative management measures.

Western and Central Pacific Ocean

The ISSF report on the status of the Western and Central Pacific yellowfin stock determined that the current fishing levels are sustainable, and that the stock is healthy.

About 62% of the yellowfin caught in this region are caught by purse seine vessels fishing on both free-swimming and FAD-associated schools, and 15% of the total catch is made by longline vessels.

The stock of western central Pacific yellowfin is managed by the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC), an international Regional Fisheries Management Organization (RFMO). WPCFC has passed a number of conservation regulations to manage the fishing effort. The WPCFC's management objective is to maintain the stock at healthy levels by limiting the use of FADs, limiting the number of fishing days, and minimizing bycatch.

Human observers are required on all large scale purse seine vessels fishing in the WCPFC area.

Stock Status

The ISSF reports that the Western and Central Pacific yellowfin stock was not in an overfished condition and that fishing levels are being maintained below the Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY). In 2013, 512,000 tons of yellowfin were caught in the Western and Central Pacific, which is below the MSY estimate of 586,000 tons.

The WCPFC has passed a number of conservation measures that will be effective by 2017. These measures will serve to maintain the yellowfin stock and the fishing pressure at sustainable levels.

Fishing Method

Longline

The albacore in your product was caught using longline fishing gear. Longline fishing is the best method for catching large, adult tuna that swim deeper in the water column, and is used to catch mature albacore, yellowfin and bigeye tuna. About 13% of the world's tuna are caught using this method.

How does Longline fishing work?

The longline fishing method catches large tunas one by one. A long main line (up to 40 miles long) is set in the water at dawn and held afloat with buoys. Branch lines with baited hooks are suspended at intervals off of the long main line. When it is time to retrieve the fish, the main line is pulled back onto the vessel mechanically. Once on board the fishing vessel, the fish are immediately blast frozen and kept in cold storage.

Pole and Line

The pole and line fishing method has existed for centuries, and today about 10% of the world's tuna are caught this way. This fishing method catches tuna individually.

How does Pole and Line Fishing work?

Pole and line vessels use poles with hooked lines to catch individual tuna. To attract the tuna to the boat, pole and line vessels can use Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs), or bright lights at night. Once the tuna have been attracted, small baitfish are released into the water, at which point the lines are dropped in the water.

Pole and line fishing vessels use more fuel to land a given amount of tuna than other fishing methods but also has very low rates of bycatch.

Purse Seine

Purse seine fishing is the primary method for catching skipjack and yellowfin tuna that go into Clover Leaf® products. This is the most efficient method to catch tuna that swim in large schools. Fishermen target both free-swimming schools and schools that congregate around both natural, and man-made floating objects called Fish Aggregating Devices, or FADs.

Over 65% of the world's tuna are caught in this way, and supply the fresh, frozen, and canned tuna markets.

How does Purse Seine Fishing work?

The purse seine method catches entire schools of tuna at once. A large net is set vertically in the water, encircling the school of tuna. Then a chain is pulled to close the bottom of the net. The full net is pulled close to the fishing vessel using a winch and the fish inside the net are brailed, or scooped onto the vessel. The tuna are transferred into storage wells on the vessel filled with refrigerated sea water, and then frozen. To learn more about purse seine fishing click here. The frozen loins are shipped directly to the cannery where the canning process is entirely automated. The tuna move in a single line from the filling machine to the packaging sealer. The sealed product is then cooked, cooled, and labeled. Once they pass Quality Assurance approval, the cans are prepared for shipment to your local market.

Thailand

The tuna in your product was processed at a plant in Thailand.

This facility is a full processing plant, and processes the tuna from whole frozen round fish all the way to the can or pouch. This facility has implemented all required quality and food management safety systems, and has passed the third party social audit.

Tuna Processing

Upon arrival to the local processing plant, the whole frozen tuna rounds are put into cold storage. The rounds are first inspected for quality, then grouped by size and weight for the most accurate thawing and cooking times.

The processing begins when the tuna is removed from the plant freezer, thawed in water and prepared for cleaning. The tuna is then loaded into metal racks, which are wheeled into large steam pre-cookers. Tuna is cooked for a prescribed time and temperature depending upon the size of the fish. Once the tuna is cooled, the tuna meat is removed from the bones. The tuna loins are then ready for packing into Clover Leaf® packaging.

Packing

These loins are then transferred to the automated canning system. The tuna move in a single line from the filling machine to the packaging sealer. The sealed product is then cooked, cooled, and labeled. Once they pass the Quality Assurance approval, the cans are prepared for shipment to your local market.

Philippines

The tuna in your product was processed at a plant in General Santos City, Philippines.

This facility is a full processing plant, and processes the tuna from whole frozen round fish all the way to the can or pouch. This facility has implemented all US and EU quality and food management safety systems, and has passed the third party social audit.

Your tuna may have come from one of several fishing vessels working in the same region. Clover Leaf® only selects the highest quality, sustainably caught tuna, so we must "cast a wide net" in terms of where our tuna is sourced. The best fish are compiled from multiple fishing trips, and the production process also results in natural mingling of fish caught by different vessels. We trace the catch from the vessel, through the supply chain, to your can.
