What do I Need to Know About Food Allergies?
A food allergy is an abnormal reaction by the immune system that occurs between a few minutes to a few hours after eating a food2.
The symptoms of a food allergy are different for everyone but may include itching in the mouth, vomiting, diarrhea, hives, eczema, rapid blood pressure changes, or asthma to name a few2. In rare situations food allergies can even cause death if not treated immediately.
It is estimated that approximately 3.5% of the adult population globally has some form of food allergy although it varies widely from country to country1. The most common food allergy is to peanuts, followed by eggs and fish, especially shellfish1.
